Do I need to know any Japanese to start?+

No! Kaiwa works for complete beginners. Start with N5-level content and build up naturally. Each card includes translations, readings, and JLPT level tags to guide your learning.

What file formats do you support?+

We currently support .srt subtitle files (UTF-8 encoded). You can get these from anime streaming sites, rip them from DVDs/Blu-rays, or find them on subtitle databases like Kitsunekko.

How accurate are the translations?+

We use Google Gemini AI for context-aware translations, with DeepL as a fallback. Translations are generally very accurate, but we recommend using them as learning aids alongside the original Japanese text.

Where does the dictionary data come from?+

We use JMdict, the most comprehensive open-source Japanese-English dictionary. It's the same dictionary used by popular apps like Jisho.org and includes detailed definitions, readings, and part-of-speech information.

Can I use this with Anki on mobile?+

Yes! The .apkg files we generate work with Anki desktop, AnkiWeb, AnkiMobile (iOS), and AnkiDroid (Android). Just import the deck file and sync across all your devices.

How long does processing take?+

Most subtitle files process in 2-5 minutes depending on length. A typical 24-minute anime episode (300-400 lines) takes about 3 minutes. You'll see real-time progress updates in your dashboard.
